How to Cleanse Dark Blue Crystals: A Full Guide

So, you’ve brought home a beautiful, deep blue crystal. Maybe it’s a wise Lapis Lazuli or a calming Sodalite. You’ve been working with it, holding it, maybe even wearing it, and after a while, you notice something… it feels a little dull. A bit heavy. The spark it had when you first got it seems to have faded.

What’s going on? Your crystal needs an energetic shower. Just like we need to wash off the day, our crystals absorb all sorts of energetic gunk from their environment (and from us!). Cleansing and charging is the most important part of crystal ownership. It’s how you hit the reset button and keep your stone working in top form.

But this is a big but not all cleansing methods are safe for every crystal. Dark blue stones, in particular, have some specific needs. Let’s get into the right way to care for them.

Several dark blue crystals, including Lapis Lazuli and Sodalite, resting on a windowsill under the light of a full moon for cleansing.

How to cleanse lapis lazuli

To safely cleanse Lapis Lazuli, you must avoid water and direct sunlight. Its Pyrite inclusions can rust, and its color can fade. The best and safest cleansing methods are:

  1. Moonlight: Place it on a windowsill overnight during a full moon.
  2. Sound: Use the vibrations from a singing bowl or bell.
  3. Selenite: Let it rest on a Selenite charging slab.

First Off, Why Do I Even Need to Cleanse My Crystals?

This is the number one question beginners ask. Think of your crystal like a spiritual sponge. As it helps you process difficult emotions or protects your energy, it absorbs what you’re releasing. Over time, that sponge gets full. A crystal that’s overloaded with stagnant energy can’t do its job effectively.

Cleansing is the process of wringing out that sponge, releasing all the stored-up energy so the crystal is fresh, clear, and ready to work with you again.

The key takeaway is that cleansing isn’t about physically cleaning your crystal; it’s about giving it an energetic reset so it can function at its best.

What Are the

When it comes to dark blue stones like Lapis Lazuli, Sodalite, Azurite, and Dumortierite, you have to be careful. Many of them are soft, porous, or contain minerals that react badly to water or sun. So, forget what you might have seen on social media and stick to these completely safe methods.

1. Moonlight (The Universal Best Friend)

Placing your crystals out under the light of the full moon is the easiest, safest, and, in my opinion, most poetic way to cleanse them. The moon’s energy is gentle and purifying, and it works for every single crystal, no exceptions.

  • How to do it: Place your dark blue crystals on a windowsill or safely outside overnight during the full moon. That’s it!

2. Sound Bath (A Vibrational Shower)

Sound is a powerful way to break up stagnant energy. The vibrations from a singing bowl, a bell, or a specific frequency on a video can pass through the crystal and shake the negative energy loose.

  • How to do it: Place your crystals near the source of the sound and let the vibrations wash over them for 5-10 minutes.

3. Other Crystals (The Self-Cleansers)

Certain crystals, like Selenite and Clear Quartz, have the ability to cleanse other stones. Placing your dark blue crystals on a Selenite charging slab or in a bowl with Clear Quartz tumblestones overnight is a fantastic, low-effort way to keep them clear.

The main takeaway is to rely on moonlight, sound, or Selenite for the safest and most effective cleansing for any dark blue crystal.

CRITICAL: Cleansing Methods to AVOID with Dark Blue Stones

I see so much bad advice online that I have to be very direct here. Using the wrong method can permanently damage your beautiful stones.

So, can I put Lapis Lazuli or Sodalite in water?

Please don’t. While a super quick rinse is probably okay for a polished stone, I just don’t risk it. Here’s why:

  • Lapis Lazuli contains Pyrite (the golden flecks). Pyrite is an iron sulfide. Iron + water = rust. Soaking your Lapis can cause it to develop rusty spots and degrade.
  • Sodalite, Azurite, and many others are soft. On the Mohs scale of hardness, these stones are often a 5 or 6. According to gemology resources like the GIA, softer, more porous stones can be damaged by prolonged water exposure.
  • Salt water is even worse. It’s abrasive and can get into microscopic cracks, causing the stone to break down over time.

What about leaving them in the sun?

This is another big no. Just as sunlight can fade a photograph, it can permanently fade the deep, rich color of stones like Sodalite, Azurite, and Sapphire. You could turn your beautiful indigo stone into a pale, washed-out version of itself.

The key takeaway is to NEVER cleanse dark blue crystals with prolonged water/salt soaks or by leaving them in direct sunlight.

It’s Cleansed! Now How Do I Charge It?

People often use “cleanse” and “charge” interchangeably, but they are two different steps. Cleansing is emptying. Charging is filling. You’re filling the crystal with a purpose, or an intention. You’re giving your tool a job.

  1. Hold the crystal in your hands. Once it’s freshly cleansed, hold it and take a few deep breaths.
  2. State your intention. You can say it aloud or in your head. Be specific. Instead of “make me confident,” try “Help me to speak my truth calmly and clearly during my meeting tomorrow.”
  3. Visualize. Imagine your intention flowing from you into the crystal. See it glowing with that purpose. Hold that thought for a minute or so.

That’s it. Your crystal is now programmed and ready to work for you.

Final Words

Caring for your crystals isn’t a chore; it’s a practice. It’s how you build a relationship with these incredible tools from the Earth. When you take the time to cleanse the old energy and charge your stone with a new purpose, you are also taking a moment to check in with yourself. What do you need to release? What do you want to call in?

Treat your dark blue crystals with the gentle respect they deserve—no sun, no salt, no long soaks—and they will be powerful, wise allies on your journey for years to come.
